MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAMME IN SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

Section 1: Recruitment

  1. All relevant information about the program will be published on the EC2U website and at each Consortium Institution website. Students can apply to any Consortium Institution in which the Joint Master Program is accredited or in the process to be accredited, namely the University of Coimbra, the University of Poitiers and the University of Turku (applications will not be open in University of Turku in 2022), which will award the Diploma. The three EC2U Universities deliver a semester that can be chosen to define the personalized Joint Master Degree study plan.

  2. The Global Admissions Committee will oversee the application and admission process and the Global Academic Board will monitor the Program’s student recruitment

The Degree Programme structure is described in the Programme Handbook available ( https://ec2u.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/didactics/pages/308544089). Limited to the Academic Year 2022/23 the second semester will only be held in Turku and the third semester in Poitiers.

Section 6: Admission Requirement and Selection Criteria

EC2U is committed to fair, transparent and consistent admission practices and procedures.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements comply with the national legislation of the countries of the partner Universities and are the following:

1. Candidates of the Degree Program must hold an official Degree issued by a Higher Education Institution belonging to a member state of the European Higher Education Area that entitles access to Master Degree programs in any given partner country. Graduates from educational systems outside of the European Higher Education Area may also be admitted if students hold an equivalent University Degree. In this case, admission will be subjected to verification by the Consortium Institution administrations in compliance with local regulations, as soon as the study program is fully accredited there.

2. In order to apply to the Master program, candidates must have a Bachelor Degree in one of the following areas: exact and natural sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, engineering, architecture, economics and management, and other social sciences relevant for the sustainable cities theme, or have a scientific technical curriculum that can be assessed equivalent to the Bachelor Degree in areas similar to those previously listed.

3. English Language certification (see accepted certificates https://ec2u.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/public/pages/308610284): B2 level, defined according the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), is required, except for an applicant with a previous university degree (bachelor, master or doctorate) delivered in English. Applicants must provide evidence of attaining B2 Level before confirmation of offer and enrolment.

Once the call expires, each Consortium Institution is responsible for the administrative eligibility check of the received applications. All eligible applications will be evaluated jointly by the Global Admission Committee.

Selection criteria and procedure

Admission to the programme is selective. There is a maximum capacity of 20 students in the programme for the first iteration (2022-23). The candidates will be ranked on a scale of 100 points. The selection criteria will be assessed based on:

  • Transcript of Records

  • Knowledge of English language

  • Motivation Letter and Curriculum vitae

The criteria include three categories:

  1. Academic Excellence (50 points)
    Points for academic excellence are based ECTS weighted avarage of the exam grades reported in the transcript of records if at the time of application the student does not hold the Bachelor. If the applicant provides more than one previous Degree, the Joint Admission Committee will consider the highest level or in case of equal level, the first one listed by the applicant.

  2. Language Knowledge (20 points)
    The knowledge of higher levels with respect the minimum requirement will be considered

  3. Personal Competencies (30 points, 10 points for each item)

    • Intercultural competence

    • Civic engagement

    • Interest in program enrolment

Section 7: Ranking of the applicants

The ranking, based on the criteria listed above, will be published by June 30th.

The first 50 students with the best score will be declared eligible by the committee and will be placed on the ranking list; the first 20 students will be admitted for enrollment. In the event of a withdrawal, the student in the next position on the ranking list will be contacted in order to start the enrollment procedure.

The admitted student list will be published in an anonymised form for transparency.

The applicant will receive an email notification from the leading Institution, University of Coimbra, with one of the following options:

  1. Admitted

  2. Admitted under condition

  3. Waiting listed

  4. Non-admitted

The applicant must accept the offer of admission within 10 working days. A notification of admission that has not been accepted within the prescribed time will expire.

Non-admitted applicants will have the opportunity to make an appeal to the Global Admission Committee within 10 working days from the publication of the ranking. Information on how to proceed will be provided in the email notifying the publication of the ranking.

For any aspect of admissions not regulated in this document, the Global Admission Committee will be responsible for establishing any further provision.

Section 8: Enrolment

The students that have passed the selection for the admission will be enroled to all the Universities chosen in the study plan where the Master Degree is accreditated.

EC2U student fee must be paid at the University of Coimbra, the administrative coordinator Institution.

Relevant information on how to enroll will be provided to the admitted candidates via email to the address they provided during the application process.

Section 9: Procedures to apply and enroll following a transfer or second degree

Students asking for a transfer from other master’s degrees or for enrollment to a second degree will have to submit the online application for an evaluation as described in Section 5 and pass with a positive mark the selection phase according to the rules reported in Section 6. The Global Admission Committee will evaluate the student’s previous academic career in order to assess a recognition of academic curriculum and proceed with enrollment at first or second year as described in Section 7.

The applicant should specify this request during the application procedure.
